Taco Bell Boycott Presentation - Monday @ ECC

Farmworker Poverty & the Taco Bell Boycott: A Presentation by the
Coalition of Immokalee Workers

Monday - October 18: 5-7 pm
Ethnic Cultural Center - Black Room
3931 Brooklyn Ave NE

For farmworkers who toil in the fields of the US, sweatshops and
modern-day slavery are grim realities. Farmworkers are among the
poorest, most vulnerable, and exploited class of laborers in the
country with no right to organize without fear of retaliation, no
right to overtime pay, no benefits of any kind, and sub-poverty
wages. In the most extreme cases, farmworkers are held in modern-day
slavery, as seen in five cases of slavery in the fields of Florida
that have been brought to justice in the past six years.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), a community-based
farmworker organization in southwest Florida, is challenging this
system by making links between the exploitation of farmworkers and
the profits of the fast-food industry, the fastest growing consumer
of fruits and vegetables harvested in the fields of the US. Led by
members of the CIW, this presentation will explore the
relationship between farmworker poverty, fast-food profits, and young
consumers – the target market of fast-food corporations. Through this
event we hope to create a space for dialogue as to how we can help
eliminate human rights abuses in US agriculture.
