Personal Safety Alert

On Monday, December 8, 2003, at approximately 2245 hours (10:40pm), a female UW student walked to her vehicle located in the Central Plaza Garage. She was abducted by an armed male who forced her to drive him to two bank locations so she could withdraw money for him. The first bank was located in Kent and the second in Lynnwood. At both banks the sum of $500 was withdrawn. Afterward, the suspect had the victim drop him off in the vicinity of 185th and Wallingford. He walked toward Highway 99 and the victim drove to her Grandparents home to call the police. The victim was not hurt.

The victim gave an excellent description, which helped King County Officers to locate him at a casino on Highway 99. All but $55 of the withdrawn $1,000 was recovered.

The investigation was handed over to the University of Washington Police Department for further investigation and filing.

Use good personal safety habits. The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs produces an excellent "Safety Information and Crime Prevention Guide" and delivers this information in the "Watch Out For Yourself" pamphlet. This pamphlet is available everywhere Students, Staff, and Faculty commonly gather. We do have the pamphlet available here at UWPD. The 2001 - 2002 and the 2002 - 2003 versions are identical in content. So you can read either version without worries about any out of date information.

Take Care and Be Safe!
