Subject: Tacoma connect problems [5202]

Hi Jennifer,

Your October 2nd post on LiveJournal made it's way to me, the
keeper of the the modem pools. We've been hearing rumblings of
poor connects out of Tacoma but can't reproduce it.

It was discovered late last week that there may have been a
capacity issue affecting Tacoma callers. If you'd been getting
busy signals those should no longer be a problem.

Have you dialed in to other ISPs recently without difficulty? If
yes, could I please get the number of the ISP.

Any unusual noise on your modem line? If you've a telephone on
the line a quick test to to lift the receiver and press any
number key but '0' to turn off dialtone. You should hear a
completely quiet static, no popcorn noises. If there is
noise it should be reported to your telephone service provider's
repair department.

Assuming your line is OK, could I please get the number you're
calling from? I'm suspicious this may a telephone company problem
between one of their central offices and the point where we pick
up the call. Only people connected through that one CO would be
affected. Trying to track this down can be extremely difficult
since we have to have reports from several people before the
telephone company will take it seriously enough to look. So if
you know of others in the Tacoma area having similar problems
please ask them send their calling numbers to me.

In the interim, if you're having difficulty connecting or
maintaining a connect one possible solution would be to try
connecting at slower speeds. Granted it's not as good for
web-browsing but can still be useful for email. If you're not
familiar with how to do that, one of the help@cac folks should be
able to assist.
