Anime Film Series and Panel Disscussion at Henry Art Gallery

Basically: free anime in a real theater, including My Neighbor Totoro.

For your information,

In conjunction with the popular "Superflat" exhibit now been shown at UW's Henry Art Gallery, Consulate-General of Japan is co-sponsoring a special free "anime" film series which will be shown on January 12, 19, and 29.

A panel disscussion, "Superflat Pop Culture + Art + Anime" will be also held on January 24, on the art and cultural power of animation, its current technical trend to 3-D effects, and why Japanese anime has infiltrated the adult market and taken such a large role in our visual culture. Clips of key Japanese anime will be shown along with discussion. Please see the attached flier for more details on the panel disscusion.

Held in conjunction with Superflat, and co-sponsored by the Consulate-General of Japan at Seattle, this series explores the Japanese animation that has influenced the contemporary art in the exhibition.

January 12: Ghost in the Shell Note from Evan: We missed it. :(
(1995) dir: Mamoru Oshii. One of the great achievements of anime, this dazzling metaphysical techno thriller is a spiritual investigation of our technological future. Rated R.

January 19: My Neighbor Totoro
(1988) dir: Hayao Miyazaki. An anime feature for children and adults, this enchanting story of two little girls who discover a family of friendly totoros in their backyard, is filled with imaginative characters and striking animation, knit together by a heartwarming story. Rated G.

January 26: Castle of Cagliostro
(1980) dir: Hayao Miyazaki. This comic adventure fantasy of a cocky master criminal is a fabulous mix of high tech gadgets, ancient castles and samurai sidekicks. Rated PG-13.
